A simple action … a chain reaction

Sir Winston Churchill said “We make a living by what we get; we make a life by what we give”.

For me truer words have never been spoken. If you are like me and have more of your career behind you than ahead; you are likely looking for ways to give back; to make a mark, to make a difference.

You know that legacy thing.

I know that I will not be remembered as the person who helped put high speed internet in the mainstream.  BUT if there are 5,6, 7 … people who become successful in their own right and remember me as having helped or influenced them in their journey then I will have been successful.

I am currently working with some bright, wonderful, passionate individuals, who want to change the world.  They have the desire but often do not have the tools or the know-how.   So helping them comes in the form of: creating a network, introducing them to people of influence, and coaching and mentoring them through the job search process.  As you would expect I am learning as much if not more from these individuals than perhaps I am helping.

Those of you out there with children, nieces and nephews, they will certainly benefit from your wisdom, and guidance; but there are still so many that can use your assistance.  If we do not invest in our youth we are not investing in our future.

These are the youth that will be our next industry leaders, our much needed Doctors and Nurses, creators of fabulous art, and maybe find a cure for a terminal illness.  We need to encourage this generation as former generations have counseled us that there are no boundaries.  Let’s provide them the chance to shine.

Today’s graduates; unlike any before, are faced with significant obstacles.  The most frustrating of course is: the plethora of experienced talent on the street.   People hiring have quite a pool to choose from and fewer and fewer are willing to hire a graduate with little to no experience.

The timing is ripe, May graduation is here.  I encourage you to reach out to your alma mater and mentor some up and coming talent.  Think about hiring a graduate rather then an experienced person. Or do both and stimulate our economy at the most basic level.   Do what ever but do something.   Our future generations are counting on you.
